About
Shimabara was Kyoto's officially licensed entertainment quarter from the 1640s, and its great gate, rebuilt in 1867, still stands at the end of a quiet residential street. Shoot it from the east side of the street with the willow (mikaeri-yanagi, where departing guests looked back) and lantern in frame. A few minutes away the Sumiya, a surviving ageya banquet house, adds another historic facade.
