Shichijo Ohashi Bridge 七条大橋
The oldest bridge on the Kamo River (1913), a five-span reinforced-concrete arch in Secession style, restored with new railings and lamps.
About
Completed in 1913 as part of Kyoto's Meiji-era modernisation, Shichijo Ohashi is a five-span reinforced-concrete arch that was enormous for its time, and it is the only bridge on the Kamo to keep its Meiji design. It was recognised as a civil engineering heritage structure in 2008. Wartime metal collection stripped its cast-iron railings and lamps, though the arches themselves survive unchanged. It sits close to Sanjusangen-do and the Kyoto National Museum, and the riverside below is quieter than the Shijo area.
