Sanjo-kai Shotengai 京都三条会商店街
One of Kyoto's longest covered shopping arcades, 800 m of local life west of Horikawa: butchers, croquette stands, tofu, pickles and old cafés, with almost no tourists.
About
Sanjo-kai stretches along Sanjo-dori from Horikawa to Senbon, near Nijo Castle, under an 800-metre covered arcade. Founded over a century ago, it has around 180 shops serving the neighbourhood: croquette stalls, bakeries, a fishmonger, tea and pickle shops, sento and small cafés. The arcade is the locals' Nishiki Market, without the crowds and with lower prices. It's a good pair with Nijo Castle and the Mibu district.
