About

Mimuroto-ji is a Shugen-related temple founded in the 8th century and the 10th stop on the Saigoku 33-temple Kannon pilgrimage. It stands in the hills east of Uji, surrounded by a 5,000 square metre garden planned around seasonal blooms: about 20,000 azaleas and rhododendrons in late April and May, some 20,000 hydrangeas of 50 varieties in a cedar-shaded valley in June, and more than 250 pots of lotus around the main hall in July. Social media fame came from heart-shaped hydrangea flower clusters, which visitors search for in June. The main hall, rebuilt in 1814, is flanked by a stone rabbit holding a ball, a cow statue whose mouth holds a stone ball you rub for success, and a snake statue for wealth. Illumination nights are held in hydrangea season.
