Kyo no Sushidokoro Suehiro 京のすし処 末廣
A retro Teramachi Nijo sushi shop, in business since the late Edo period, serving Kyoto-style saba-zushi, mushi-zushi in winter and good-value assorted boxes.
Saba-zushi (whole): ¥5,500
About
Suehiro sits on Teramachi-dori just north of Nijo, among antique dealers, tea shops and paper stores, and has been making Kyoto-style sushi for around 200 years. The shop is gently old-fashioned, with a small dining room and a takeaway counter; the menu is Kyoto zushi rather than Edomae: saba-zushi, hako-zushi, chirashi and the winter speciality mushi-zushi, steamed sushi served hot in a lidded box. Prices are moderate and the atmosphere is pure old Kyoto, a short walk from the Imperial Palace and Ippodo Tea.
