About

Zushi (or zushi) are Kyoto's narrow through-lanes between main streets, and Koyaku-zushi is among the most atmospheric. It links Shijo-dori with Ayanokoji, a stone's throw from the busy Shijo-Karasuma crossing, yet feels a century away: wooden machiya with lattice windows, potted plants and a quiet bend. The name relates to the Heian monk Kuya, who is said to have had a practice hall here, and to the spirit of Taira no Masakado, whose head was said to have been displayed nearby. Shops and small restaurants operate in a few houses. It's a quick detour that shows the old city hiding behind the office buildings.
