About

The stretch of the Kamo River between Sanjo and Shijo bridges is Kyotos living room. Its riverside path runs below Pontochos teahouses, and every summer (May to September) restaurants along Pontocho and Kiyamachi build kawayuka platforms over the water for open-air dining. At dusk, couples sit along the bank at strikingly regular distances, a phenomenon known as "Kamogawa equal-spacing law" that has become a Kyoto meme. The Higashiyama hills rise behind, herons stand in the shallows, and the evening light makes it one of the best free experiences in the city.
