Ishibe-koji Lane 石塀小路
A short, winding lane of stone walls, cobbles and ryokan entrances tucked between Nene-no-Michi and Shimokawara-dori, often called the most atmospheric alley in Higashiyama.
About
Enter from Nene-no-Michi beside the small gateway and follow the lane as it doglegs downhill: the low stone walls, flagstone paving and lantern-lit inn entrances make tight, layered compositions, especially after rain when the stones shine. It is a residential and ryokan lane rather than a shopping street, so it stays hushed even when Ninenzaka is packed. Evening, after the inns light their lanterns, is the most photogenic time.
Highlights
- Stone walls and cobbles curving out of sight
- Lantern-lit ryokan gateways
- Wet-stone reflections after rain
- Usually far quieter than nearby Ninenzaka
Tips
- Keep voices low and do not step into inn entrances or gardens.
- No tripods: the lane is narrow and residents need to pass.
- Combine with Nene-no-Michi and Yasaka Pagoda in one loop.
