About

Hoshino Resorts opened Hoshinoya Kyoto in 2009 on the south bank of the Oi (Hozu) river, about 15 minutes upstream from Togetsukyo, in buildings that began as a villa used by Kyoto merchants a century ago. Guests check in at a landing near Togetsukyo and travel by wooden boat up the river; the hotel has no public road entrance. The rooms sit in low timber buildings stacked against the hillside, with hinoki baths, Karakami paper screens printed by the Kyoto workshop Karacho, and views onto the river and maples. There is a Japanese garden landscaped by the master gardener Sano Toemon, an incense ceremony, and a kaiseki dining room. Unlike many hotels, it is strictly for staying guests: from Arashiyama you can see it from the river boats and the riverside path.
