About

Chiba is Japans top producer of nashi (Asian pears) and Ichikawa is where it began: pear growing in the Yawata area dates back to the 18th century. Today the orchards cluster along the Omachi "Nashi Kaido" road near the Ichikawa City Zoo, with dozens of farm stands selling Kosui, Hosui, Niitaka and other varieties from early August. Several orchards offer pear picking, priced by weight, from mid-August to mid-October; staff show you how to twist the fruit off the low-trained branches. Combine with the zoo for a full family day.
