About

Kaii Higashiyama (1908-1999), whose serene blue-green landscapes define modern Japanese-style painting, lived in Ichikawas Nakayama district from 1945 until his death. The city built this memorial hall near his home in 2005, in a German-inspired design with a tower that nods to the years he studied in Germany. Exhibits rotate through reproductions and original prints, sketchbooks, letters and photos, and explain his techniques and his work on the Toshodai-ji temple screens. Theres a calm cafe, a small shop with his landscape postcards, and a garden. Its modest but beautifully kept, and a natural pairing with nearby Nakayama Hokekyo-ji.
