About

Kitsuki is known as a 'sandwich castle town' because samurai lived on the north and south ridges with merchants in the valley between. Suya-no-saka, named after a vinegar shop at the bottom, drops from the north samurai district into the valley and lines up perfectly with Shioya-no-saka climbing to the south district, creating a much-photographed view of stone steps, earthen walls and old roofs. Stone lanterns light up at dusk. Walk the samurai lanes (Kitadai and Minamidai), peek into preserved houses like Ohara-tei, and drop into the merchant town for local sweets. It's a 20-minute drive from Oita Airport, perfect for a spare few hours.
