About

Pritzker laureate Shigeru Ban designed OPAM (opened 2015) as a 'museum open to the street': the whole ground-floor facade of tall glass panels can fold away, turning the atrium into a public plaza with sculptures, a shop and a cafe. Upstairs, a lattice of Oita bamboo-inspired timber structures and a sky-lit gallery hold the prefecture's collection, from Edo-period Bungo painters to modern artists, and large touring exhibitions. It is 15 minutes on foot from Oita Station and a natural stop if you're flying out of Oita Airport or visiting Takasakiyama and Umitamago.
