Beppu Eki Ichiba (Station Market) べっぷ駅市場
Narrow covered market under the railway tracks south of Beppu Station where locals shop for fish, pickles, deli dishes and cheap bento. Unpolished, Showa-era and fascinating.
About
Running along beneath the elevated JR line, Beppu Eki Ichiba is a long, dim corridor of small stalls that has served Beppu households for decades: fishmongers with Bungo Channel catch, butchers, tofu and pickle sellers, deli counters with ready-made side dishes, and stalls selling toriten and croquettes by the piece. Prices are local, not tourist, and it's a great place to assemble a picnic or a cheap self-catering dinner for a ryokan with a kitchen. Many stalls close by late afternoon and on Sundays.
