About

Designed by Tachu Naito, the structural engineer behind Nagoya TV Tower, Tsutenkaku and Tokyo Tower, Beppu Tower went up in 1957 during the post-war onsen boom and its giant neon 'Asahi Beer' sign became a local landmark. A 2023 restoration repainted it in its original grey, re-extended the lightning rod to bring it back to 100 m, and reopened the 16th-17th floor 'Sea, Mountain and Onsen Town' observatory, which looks over Beppu Bay one way and the steaming hills the other. The 5th floor now has a BBQ and sauna deck, there's a small art space on the 2nd floor and a cafe on the ground floor. It's beautiful lit up at night from the Kitahama seafront.
