About

Opened in 2021 next to Beppu's yacht harbour, Kai Beppu is a contemporary onsen ryokan designed by Kengo Kuma: a stepped building wrapped in a vertical wooden lattice, with a central courtyard and rooms looking straight out over Beppu Bay. Interiors use Beppu bamboo weaving and local crafts, the large public bath has a sea-facing outdoor pool, and evening programs include a lively 'Yukemuri Matsuri'-style festival performance in the courtyard. It's a 10-minute walk from Beppu Station, which makes it practical as well as beautiful.
