Hotel New Grand ホテルニューグランド
Yokohama's grand waterfront hotel of 1927, birthplace of doria and spaghetti Napolitan, where MacArthur stayed in 1945.
About
Hotel New Grand opened in 1927 facing Yamashita Park, built with the backing of the city as part of Yokohama's recovery from the 1923 earthquake. Its main building, designed by Watanabe Jin, has a sweeping staircase leading up to a lobby with tiles, tapestry and carved wood. The Swiss chef Saly Weil ran its kitchen and trained a generation of Japanese chefs; seafood doria, spaghetti Napolitan and pudding à la mode are all said to have originated here. Guests have included Charlie Chaplin and Babe Ruth, and in August 1945 General Douglas MacArthur stayed here on his first nights in occupied Japan. The original building is still in use and the Café serves the classic dishes.
