Yanaka Fujimizaka Slope 富士見坂(西日暮里)
A narrow residential slope in Nishi-Nippori that was once famous as the last natural Mount Fuji view in central Tokyo, still a lovely sunset frame.
About
Fujimizaka runs down from the Suwa Shrine ridge in Nishi-Nippori 3-chome, and from the top you look straight down the slope westward. Until 2013 Mount Fuji could be seen at the end of the view, before a new building blocked it, but the slope itself, with its low houses, stone walls and the setting sun at the bottom, is still a beautiful and nostalgic composition. Stand near the top and shoot down the slope at sunset. It is a residential street: no tripods blocking the slope, keep quiet in the evening and do not photograph residents.
Highlights
- Steep residential slope facing the sunset
- A piece of Tokyo history: the lost Fuji view
- Old-town atmosphere next to Yanaka
- Combine with Yuyake Dandan and Suwa Shrine
Tips
- Come around sunset for the best light.
- Mount Fuji is no longer visible here; enjoy it for the slope and sky.
- Walk on to Yuyake Dandan in a few minutes.
