Ultraman Shotengai (Soshigaya-Okura) ウルトラマン商店街(祖師ヶ谷大蔵)

The shopping streets around Soshigaya-Okura Station, a stone's throw from where Tsuburaya Productions created Ultraman, are decorated with Ultraman gates, a statue in the station plaza and themed shop signs. It is a cheerfully nerdy local shotengai that few foreign visitors find.

About

Tsuburaya Productions, the studio behind Ultraman, was based in this part of Setagaya for decades. In 2005 three local shopping streets fanning out from Soshigaya-Okura Station on the Odakyu Line renamed themselves Ultraman Shotengai. Each entrance is now marked by a giant Ultraman striking his signature pose on top of the street lamp-arch. A statue of the hero greets you at the station, and many shops, from the bakery to the bathhouse, have some Ultraman twist on their goods or signs. It remains a working neighbourhood shopping street with greengrocers and old tea shops, not a theme park. That is the charm: a down-to-earth slice of suburban Tokyo with a giant silver alien keeping watch.
