About

Founded in 1924 by Hisaya Iwasaki, third president of Mitsubishi, the Toyo Bunko is one of the world's top five Asian research libraries, holding about a million volumes including national treasures. Its museum, opened in 2011, puts the treasures on show: the highlight is the Morrison Library, the collection of Western books about Asia bought from Times correspondent George Ernest Morrison in 1917, displayed as a breathtaking three-storey wall of leather spines. Themed exhibitions draw on manuscripts, maps and prints; from Oct 7, 2026 to Jan 17, 2027, What Is a World Map? centres on a newly restored 17th-century Kunyu Wanguo Quantu map. The museum reopened on Jan 21, 2026 after a year's renovation. Through the garden, the Orient Cafe is run by Koiwai Farm.
