About

Toraya traces its history to the Muromachi period and is best known for yokan, the dense, glossy bars of sweet red-bean jelly that are a classic Japanese gift. Its Akasaka flagship, rebuilt in 2018 by architect Hiroshi Naito with warm cypress and lattice screens, holds a shop on the ground floor, a basement gallery on wagashi culture, and the Toraya Karyo tearoom on the third floor overlooking the trees of the Akasaka Imperial Grounds. In the tearoom, order seasonal namagashi (fresh sweets) with matcha, anmitsu with black syrup, oshiruko red-bean soup, or kakigori in summer. It's a calm, elegant counterpoint to Tokyo's viral sweets.
