Tokyo Station (Gransta & Shinkansen Platforms) 東京駅 グランスタ・新幹線ホーム
The station as a destination in its own right: a city of ekiben, sweets and souvenir counters inside the gates, bullet trains sliding in every few minutes, and the famous seven-minute Shinkansen cleaning drill.
About
Most visitors photograph the red-brick Marunouchi facade and leave, but the real Tokyo Station experience is underneath and behind it. Gransta, the sprawling inside-the-gates shopping zone, links the Marunouchi and Yaesu sides with bakeries, Tokyo-only sweets, bento and sake counters, and Ekibenya Matsuri, which stocks well over a hundred regional ekiben from all over Japan so you can eat Hokkaido crab or Yonezawa beef on a train to anywhere. On the Yaesu side, Gransta Yaesu and the Grand Roof canopy frame the Shinkansen gates, where the Tohoku, Joetsu and Hokuriku lines (green, red and pink-nosed trains, sometimes coupled together) share platforms with the Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto and Osaka. At the JR East Shinkansen platforms, a pink-and-red uniformed crew turns each arriving train around in about seven minutes, finishing with a synchronised bow to the passengers. Below ground, the station sprawls into Yaesu Chikagai and the First Avenue arcades, home to the separately listed Ramen Street and Character Street.
Highlights
- Ekibenya Matsuri: 100+ regional ekiben, many from far-off stations, sold from early morning
- The JR East Shinkansen cleaning crew's seven-minute turnaround and bow, platforms 20–23
- Coupled Komachi (red) and Hayabusa (green) trains splitting and joining on the Tohoku Shinkansen
- Gransta's Tokyo-only sweets and souvenir counters, from butter sandwiches to limited-edition KitKats
- Yaesu Grand Roof, a white sail-like canopy over the Yaesu bus and taxi plaza
- Look up inside the Marunouchi domes (outside the gates) for the restored eagle and zodiac reliefs
Tips
- Gransta and Ekibenya Matsuri are inside the ticket gates: if you are not travelling, buy a JR platform ticket (nyujoken) at a machine, which gives you up to 2 hours inside.
- To watch the Shinkansen cleaning crew you also need a platform ticket that covers the Shinkansen gates; arrive at a Tohoku Shinkansen platform a few minutes before a train terminates.
- Ekibenya Matsuri gets slammed 7:00–9:00 and around 17:00–19:00 on Fridays; mid-morning has the best choice with the shortest queue.
- Coin lockers fill by late morning; use the luggage counters on the Yaesu side or reserve an ecbo cloak space in advance.
- Signs are colour-coded: follow orange for the Chuo Line, red for the Marunouchi side, blue for Yaesu and Shinkansen.
