About

Between 1953 and 1982 the two-storey wooden Tokiwa-so apartments in Minami-Nagasaki housed an astonishing roster of young manga artists, including Osamu Tezuka (Astro Boy), the Fujiko Fujio duo (Doraemon) and Shotaro Ishinomori (Cyborg 009). The original was demolished in 1982, but in 2020 Toshima City rebuilt it in a park close to the original site, recreating the four-and-a-half-tatami rooms, the shared kitchen and toilets, the creaky staircase and even the stains on the walls. Upstairs rooms are dressed as artists' studios of the time, with desks, ink bottles and stacks of manuscripts, while the ground floor hosts exhibitions. The surrounding streets have the "Tokiwa-so Street" with manga signage and a café modelled on the artists' hangout.
