Toden Tram Street Section at Asukayama 都電荒川線 飛鳥山の併用軌道
The only stretch where the Toden Arakawa Line runs in the road with cars, climbing and curving up a slope beside Asukayama Park.
About
Between Oji-ekimae and Asukayama stops the Toden tram leaves its own track and shares Meiji-dori and Hongo-dori with traffic, climbing a curving slope at the foot of Asukayama hill. Stand on the pavement near Asukayama stop and shoot downhill toward Oji to catch a little tram leaning into the curve among buses and cars, with the JR tracks and Shinkansen viaduct nearby. Cherry season in early April adds blossom from the park above, and late afternoon gives warm light. Stay on the pavement and crossings only, never step into the road, and do not use flash.
Highlights
- Tram sharing the road with cars on a curved slope
- Rare street-running section of the line
- Cherry blossoms from Asukayama Park in spring
- Shinkansen and JR trains nearby too
Tips
- A mid-telephoto from the pavement compresses the curve and traffic.
- Trams run every few minutes, so be patient for a clean frame.
- Combine with the free Asukayama Park monorail up the hill.
