About

Edo kiriko, cut glass with dense geometric patterns such as chrysanthemums, hemp leaves and fish-scale motifs, has been made in Tokyo's east side since the 1830s and is a designated traditional craft. At this Sumida gallery-shop, working artisans show you how lines are marked on the glass, then you sit at a rotating diamond wheel and grind your own pattern into a coloured or clear glass under their guidance. It takes about 90 minutes, is harder than it looks, and the result is a genuinely usable souvenir. The front of the shop sells pieces by local masters, from sake cups to tumblers, which make outstanding gifts. English support is available but limited, so simple pre-booked sessions work best. Combine with the Sumida Hokusai Museum or Ryogoku a few stops away.
