About

Baseball is Japan's national obsession, and batting centres are its neighbourhood gyms. This one sits incongruously on Kuyakusho-dori in Kabukicho, between host clubs and karaoke bars, and has been entertaining salarymen, couples on dates and curious tourists for decades. A dozen netted cages are graded by speed, around 70 km/h for beginners up to 130 km/h for the brave, with one cage for pitching practice (a 'strike-out' target board). You buy coins or a card, choose a cage, grab a helmet and a bat from the rack, and swing at around 25 balls per game. It's cheap, fun and very Japanese, with spectators on the walkway cheering the big hitters. Open from mid-morning until the small hours, it's an excellent late-night alternative to drinking.
