Shimokitazawa 下北沢
Tokyo's bohemian village of vintage clothing, live houses, tiny theatres and indie coffee, now with the car-free Shimokita Senrogai linear park over the old train tracks.
About
Shimokitazawa is where Tokyo's young creatives shop and drink: more than a hundred vintage stores (from ¥500 bins to curated Americana), small theatres like Honda Gekijo, legendary live houses (Shelter, Basement Bar, 251), record shops and hundreds of bars. Since the Odakyu tracks went underground, the Shimokita Senrogai park strip has added Bonus Track, Reload and Mikan Shimokita, low-rise complexes of independent shops and food stalls. Best at dusk on weekdays.
Highlights
- Vintage clothing and ¥1,000 thrift bins on every block
- Indie live houses and the Honda Theatre
- Bonus Track and Reload: low-rise indie shopping parks
- Curry and coffee scene (Shimokita curry festival in autumn)
Tips
- Most vintage shops open around noon, don't come early
- Walk the Senrogai linear park between Shimokitazawa and Setagaya-Daita
- Check live-house schedules for a gig the same night
