Shimbashi SL Square 新橋 SL広場
The square outside Shimbashi Station's west exit with a preserved C11 steam locomotive, a salaryman meeting point and an only-in-Tokyo scene after work.
About
Stand at the far side of the square from the station and shoot the C11 locomotive with the station building and neon of Shimbashi's izakaya streets around it. Weekday evenings after 6pm are the most characterful, when office workers gather in front of the engine before heading into the nearby yakitori alleys; TV crews often film street interviews here. The engine was placed here in 1972 to mark 100 years of Japanese railways, as Shimbashi was the terminus of the first line. Keep faces of passers-by out of close-ups, do not climb on the locomotive, and do not block the station exits.
Highlights
- Preserved C11 steam locomotive in the open square
- Classic salaryman after-work scene
- Neon of the Shimbashi izakaya streets behind
- Historic link to Japan's first railway
Tips
- Weekday evening is the iconic time; weekends feel empty.
- The area around the station is slated for redevelopment, so check that the engine is still on display.
- Walk under the JR tracks for the yakitori stalls of the Shimbashi gado-shita.
