About

Shibuya Hikawa Shrine sits on a wooded rise off Meiji-dori, reached by a long stone approach under huge trees that blot out the city. Local lore says it was founded in ancient times by Prince Yamato Takeru; it was once famous as one of Edo's three great sumo venues, and a dohyo (sumo ring) still stands in the grounds for festival bouts. The September autumn festival brings mikoshi and stalls. Few tourists ever cross from Shibuya's nightlife to here, and residents treat it like a neighbourhood forest.
