About

Real-estate entrepreneur Seijiro Matsuoka spent decades buying at auction, and the museum he founded in 1975 reflects his wide taste: Greek, Roman and Egyptian antiquities, Gandhara and Indian Buddhist sculpture, one of Japan's finest collections of Chinese ceramics from Song celadon to Ming blue-and-white, Japanese painting and a room of Western paintings from the Barbizon school to the Impressionists. Reopened in 2022 after renovation, it rotates themed displays room by room. In 2026 a long-running show of Etruscan antiquities (to Feb 7, 2027) sits alongside seasonal Japanese paintings and Ming-to-Qing Chinese ceramics from Oct 27. It is rarely crowded, and the lobby looks onto a small garden.
