Kyu-Asakura House 旧朝倉家住宅
A 1919 wooden mansion with tatami rooms opening onto a hillside garden, hidden just off fashionable Daikanyama's Kyu-Yamate-dori, an Important Cultural Property for almost pocket change.
About
Built in 1919 for Asakura Torajiro, chairman of the Tokyo prefectural assembly, this two-storey Taisho-era house has somehow survived amid Daikanyama's boutiques. Slip off your shoes and walk the polished corridors past sliding doors, carved transoms and a Western-style drawing room, then sit on the veranda overlooking a sloping garden of maples, stone lanterns and moss. In mid-November the maples turn scarlet and the house fills with quiet admirers. A few hundred metres from T-Site, yet most shoppers walk by without noticing the gate.
