About

Begun by Tokugawa Yorifusa and completed by his son Mitsukuni, who sought advice from the Ming Chinese scholar Zhu Shunshui, Koishikawa Korakuen blends Japanese and Chinese design. Paths circle a central pond with a Horai island, then wind through miniatures of famous places, Kyoto's Togetsukyo, Lake Xihu's causeway, the Kiso river valley. The Engetsukyo (Full-Moon Bridge) forms a perfect circle with its reflection, while the vermilion Tsutenkyo bridge glows among maples in autumn. Plum groves bloom in February, a weeping cherry in late March, and irises in a small paddy in June. The roller coaster of Tokyo Dome City occasionally screams beyond the trees.
