Kita-Senju Shukuba-machi Street 北千住 宿場町通り
The old Nikko-kaido post-town street in Kita-Senju, where the Edo-period Yokoyama merchant house and old shopfronts stand among modern shops.
About
Walk north from Kita-Senju Station along Shukuba-machi-dori, the former Nikko-kaido highway, and stop at the Yokoyama House: a black-timbered Edo merchant house with a deep earthen storehouse and a gate that still bears marks said to date from the 1868 Boshin War. Shoot along the street from across the road to place the old house among the modern shops, or frame its dark facade and noren tightly. Morning and late afternoon give soft light. The house is a private residence: photograph only from the street, do not enter or touch the gate.
