About

Kita-Senju was the first post town on the Nikko and Oshu highways, and drinking has been part of its life ever since. Today the lanes between the station's west exit and the old Shukuba-machi street form one of Tokyo's best izakaya districts. Legendary names like Senju no Nagami, famous for its lemon sour, sit beside standing kushikatsu bars, fish-focused counters and smoke-filled yakitori grills, many of them decades old. Prices are refreshingly low, the vibe is cheerful, and the area is easy to reach because Kita-Senju is a major junction for five rail lines. After a few drinks, walk north along Shukuba-machi-dori past old shops and storehouses for a sense of the Edo post town.
