About

Happo-en is a wedding and banquet venue built around a gorgeous stroll garden of ponds, maples and bonsai, some of them hundreds of years old. Tucked into it is Mu-an, a tea house that industrialist Kuhara Fusanosuke cherished, inviting tea masters from Kyoto to live on the estate; he added the table-style ryurei seating area over what was once an earthen floor. Two ways to visit: teicha, a walk-in bowl of matcha with a wagashi sweet served at the tables, four days a week; or otemae, a reservation-only ceremony in which a staff member prepares tea in front of you, with an option to try whisking yourself. It is calmer and more elegant than the tourist studios, and the garden itself is free to wander, come in November for the maples or spring for the azaleas. Weddings happen most weekends, so expect kimono-clad guests and photographers.
