Happo-en Garden 八芳園 日本庭園
A 'beautiful from eight directions' Edo-era garden in Shirokanedai, with a koi pond, 500-year-old bonsai and a teahouse, free to walk, yet known mostly to wedding guests.
About
Happo-en is a wedding and banquet venue, which is precisely why visitors overlook its splendid garden. The grounds date back to the Edo period estate of Okubo Hikozaemon and were later reshaped by industrialist Kuhara Fusanosuke. Paths wind past a big koi pond, waterfalls, stone lanterns and a renowned collection of bonsai, some several centuries old. The Muan teahouse offers matcha and sweets, and the cafe and restaurant overlook the greenery. If you catch a wedding party in kimono crossing the bridge, it feels like a scene from a film.
