About

Everyone knows the Hachiko statue at Shibuya Station, where the faithful Akita waited every day for nearly ten years after his owner, Professor Hidesaburo Ueno, died suddenly in 1925. Ueno taught agricultural engineering at the Imperial University's Faculty of Agriculture, then based at Komaba, which is why he commuted from Shibuya. To mark the 80th anniversary of Hachi's death, the University of Tokyo unveiled this statue on 8 March 2015 at the gate of its Faculty of Agriculture in Yayoi: Ueno, in hat and coat with his briefcase, bends down as Hachi jumps up joyfully at him, finally reunited. It is a touching, much less crowded alternative to the Shibuya statue, and the nearby faculty building has displays on Hachi's story.
