Game Center Mikado (Takadanobaba) ゲーセンミカド 高田馬場
A legendary retro arcade by the Takadanobaba tracks, stuffed with 1980s–90s cabinets, shmup and fighting game communities, and wild live-streamed tournaments.
About
Mikado has become a pilgrimage site for arcade lovers: two cramped floors of vintage cabinets, from Street Fighter II and Darkstalkers to obscure shoot-'em-ups, Neo Geo machines and old sit-down racers, many at 50–100 yen per credit. It is a hub for Japan's competitive retro scene, live-streaming tournaments and hosting events with famous players; when the pandemic hit, fans crowdfunded to keep it alive. The atmosphere is noisy, friendly and nerdy, and you are as likely to see salarymen as students from nearby Waseda.
