About

Den-en-chofu was planned in the 1920s by Shibusawa Eiichi's company as a garden city on the English model, with streets radiating like a fan from the station. Its original 1923 station building, a European cottage design with a steep two-stage mansard roof, became the symbol of Tokyo's most exclusive residential neighbourhood. When the tracks were moved underground the building was demolished in 1990, but residents campaigned for its return and it was reconstructed in 2000 on the west side, now purely decorative. Stand at the station plaza and walk the ginkgo-lined avenues that fan out from it to see grand houses and gardens; in late November the ginkgo turn brilliant yellow.
