Chuka Soba Fukuju (Sasazuka) 中華そば 福寿
A Sasazuka shotengai shop dating from the early 1950s that boils its noodles in a huge old cauldron and seasons its shoyu ramen with a soba-shop style kaeshi.
Gomoku ramen: ¥950
About
Fukuju has stood on Sasazuka's shopping street since the early 1950s (sources give 1951 to 1954). The previous owner came from a soba restaurant, and the soy tare is built on a soba-style kaeshi, giving the broth a deep, rounded flavour. Noodles are boiled in a giant old iron cauldron, a sight in itself. The menu is classic: chuka soba, gomoku ramen with mixed toppings, and a few rice dishes, all at modest prices. It is one of the gentlest, most nostalgic bowls in the city, a short ride from Shinjuku on the Keio Line.
