About

NIFREL, opened in 2015 next to Expo 70 Commemorative Park, takes a different approach from Kaiyukan: each zone is themed on a sense or idea, such as colour, skill, hiding or shape, and creatures are displayed in minimal, gallery-like tanks with artful lighting. The WONDER MOMENTS room by artist Matsuo Takahiro is a projection-and-light installation around a glowing sphere. In the "Moving" zone, ring-tailed lemurs, capybaras, pelicans and other birds wander through a large open hall with visitors, and a white tiger and hippos can be seen in the "Waterside" zone. It is compact, very photogenic and good for a couple of hours, especially combined with the Tower of the Sun.
