About

After the 1970 World Exposition, the first in Asia, the site was turned into parkland, with only a few structures kept: the Tower of the Sun, the steel pavilion that is now the Expo 70 Pavilion museum, and the National Museum of Ethnology building by Kurokawa Kisho. Around them are a 26-hectare Japanese Garden built for the Expo with streams, ponds and a tea house, a Natural Cultural Garden of forest regenerated from the bare Expo grounds, about 5,500 cherry trees, a large rose garden, and seasonal fields of tulips, poppies, cosmos and sunflowers. The adjacent ExpoCity has NIFREL, a mall and a giant Ferris wheel. The park makes an easy half day from Umeda by subway and monorail.
