About

Osaka planned a modern art museum from the 1980s and spent decades collecting before the Nakanoshima Museum of Art finally opened in February 2022. The building, designed by Endo Katsuhiko, is a matte black box with a soaring, open "passage" atrium where escalators crisscross between floors, open to anyone without a ticket. The collection of about 6,000 works includes Modiglianis Reclining Nude with Loose Hair, Saeki Yuzo, the Gutai group and a large design collection of posters and chairs. Exhibitions range from Western masters to manga, design and games (a Capcom show was a 2025 hit). On the lawn out front sits Ships Cat (Muse), Kenji Yanobe's large cat in a space suit, which has become the museums mascot and a popular photo stop.
