Midosuji Ginkgo Avenue 御堂筋のイチョウ並木
Osaka's grand north-south boulevard turns into a tunnel of gold each late autumn as its hundreds of ginkgo trees change colour.
About
Midosuji is lined with nearly a thousand ginkgo trees between Umeda and Namba, and from late November to early December the whole avenue glows yellow. The stretch between Yodoyabashi and Shinsaibashi is the most photogenic: stand on the wide pedestrian pavements and shoot along the trees for a vanishing-point frame, with heritage buildings and later the winter illuminations adding interest. Fallen leaves carpet the pavements for a week or two.
Highlights
- Hundreds of ginkgo trees in gold
- Long symmetrical boulevard perspective
- Heritage buildings along the route
- Winter illuminations after the leaves
Tips
- Peak colour is usually late November to early December.
- Don't stand in the cycle lanes on the pavement while shooting.
- Weekend mornings have less traffic.
