About

Kondayama Kofun in Habikino is attributed to Emperor Ojin, deified as Hachiman, and while slightly shorter than Daisen, its heaped earth is reckoned the largest in Japan by volume. It is part of the UNESCO Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group and, like other imperial tombs, cannot be entered, but the moat-side path and the worship place show its scale. Right beside it, Konda Hachimangu, one of the oldest Hachiman shrines, holds an autumn festival in which a palanquin crosses into the tomb precinct over a bridge, one of the few times anyone enters. The quiet residential area around has many smaller kofun, easily linked on foot to Domyoji Temple and the Fujiidera temple.
