About

Fujiidera, in the city of the same name in the Furuichi kofun area, was founded in the 8th century and became a stop on the Saigoku pilgrimage around western Japan. Its main image is a seated dry-lacquer Senju Kannon of the Nara period, a National Treasure and one of the very few such statues to have over a thousand actual arms, each with an eye in its palm, fanning out like a halo. The statue is a hidden Buddha shown only on the 18th of every month. In late April the wisteria (fuji) trellises in front of the main hall bloom purple and white, and the grounds fill with photographers. The temple sits next to a covered shopping street a few minutes from Kintetsu Fujiidera Station, and combines naturally with the nearby Furuichi kofun tombs.
