About

While Edo's ukiyo-e is world famous, Osaka (Kamigata) developed its own style in the 19th century: portraits of kabuki stars of the Dotonbori theatres, often commissioned by fan clubs and printed with rich colours, metallics and embossing. The Kamigata Ukiyoe Museum, just next to Hozenjis Mizukake Fudo, is the only museum dedicated to the genre, showing rotating selections across several small floors, explained in English. On the top floor you can try printing a simple woodblock design yourself, and the shop sells reproductions and postcards. It takes about half an hour and is a cultured break from the Dotonbori crowds.
