About

Ikukunitama Jinja enshrines the spirit of the land of Japan itself and claims a founding in legendary times on the Uemachi plateau where Osaka Castle now stands; in 1585 Toyotomi Hideyoshi moved it to its present site to make way for his castle. The main hall uses the rare Ikukunitama-zukuri style, in which three gabled roofs are joined under one ridge. The precinct contains more than a dozen smaller shrines, including Josei-sha for women's wishes and one for the craftsmen of joruri puppet theatre, and a statue of the Edo-period novelist Ihara Saikaku, who held a legendary 24-hour poetry marathon here. In early September the Hikoroku Matsuri honours the rakugo pioneer Yonezawa Hikohachi, who performed on the grounds, and in July the Ikutama Natsu Matsuri is one of the city's classic summer festivals. It sits at the northern end of the Tennoji temple town, so pair it with a walk south along the slopes and temples of Shitadera-machi.
