Hanshin Meibutsu Ikayaki 阪神名物 いか焼き
The Hanshin department store basement stand where Osakans queue for 'ikayaki': chopped squid pressed in a thin crepe between hot iron plates. A cheap, very local Umeda snack.
Deluxe ikayaki (with egg): ¥270
About
Osaka ikayaki is nothing like grilled squid on a stick: here chopped squid and batter are pressed flat and crisp between two heavy hot plates in seconds, then brushed with sweet sauce. The Hanshin version has been sold for decades and is so popular the queue is part of the store's identity. Variants include 'deluxe' with egg. Eat at the standing counters in the basement snack park, one of Umeda's best cheap-eats zones.
