Aizendo Shoman-in 愛染堂勝鬘院
A small temple in Tennoji dedicated to Aizen Myoo, the deity of love, holding the oldest building in Osaka city, a two-storey Tahoto pagoda rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1597, and the Aizen Matsuri that opens Osaka's summer.
About
Shoman-in is believed to have been founded by Prince Shotoku as part of Shitennoji's charitable facilities, and is known as Aizendo after its main image, the red, many-armed Aizen Myoo who transforms passion into enlightenment. Because "ai" also means love, it has become the city's temple for romance and matchmaking. The Tahoto pagoda, rebuilt by Hideyoshi in 1597, is an Important Cultural Property and is regarded as the oldest surviving building in Osaka city. A sacred katsura tree with intertwined trunks is another love symbol, and the Aizen-gozen well is said to bring good relationships. From 30 June to 2 July the Aizen Matsuri, the first of the city's summer festivals, parades young women in yukata on palanquins. It is a quiet stop on the slope above Tennoji.
